Dandelion - Deep Roots, Deep Healing

I first started working with dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) when I was learning to make herbal salves. I made a dandelion salve using the blossoms in spring. I found it very helpful for itch relief from bug bites. My friend used it for eczema with great results. Dandelion is in the daisy family. Many people believe it is an annoying weed. They could not be further from the truth. I really fell in love with dandelion last year when I was struggling with acid reflux. This was one of the many symptoms of perimenopause that I had been coping with (unsuccessfully) for months. Anyone that has experienced acid reflux knows how uncomfortable it can be. In addition to being uncomfortable, it can also be painful and scary. The sharp pains it would cause in my chest, coupled with the heart palpitations I was experiencing because of estrogen loss, convinced me I was on the verge of a heart attack. After many doctor appointments and cardiac testing, it was determined that I had acid reflux.

Initially I was put on a prescription medication and told that it would probably only be for a few months. Once I started using herbs to manage my other symptoms, I felt confident to try an herbal remedy for the reflux. I had heard that dandelion root was extremely helpful. Dandelion is a bitter tonic herb that stimulates digestion and bile flow.

Since, like many people, I had dandelion growing all over my property, I figured it was worth a try. I pulled up a few dandelion roots and combined it with 100 proof vodka to make a tincture. After letting it sit for 6 weeks I gave it a try. It worked almost immediately! It took some trial and error to find the right dose for me. I found that I cannot take it right before bed because it is a diuretic, unless I want to get up to pee during the night. I also found that just 5 drops of the tincture is all I need for relief. I only take it as needed, which is not very often now that I am more careful about what I am eating. Some people recommend taking dandelion tincture when you know you’re going to eat or drink something that will cause reflux. I prefer to just be careful about what I am consuming and only take it when needed.

Dandelion Root has many benefits and can be used both topically and internally. I recommend trying it if you are struggling with digestive issues like acid reflux. As always, do your research, especially if you are taking pharmaceuticals or have any chronic health conditions.
